Mayor Zeb Smathers used the Sept. 12 meeting to publicly commend the Canton Police Department for its response to recent social-media rumors about alleged events at local schools.
Smathers praised Lt. Reece and Chief Sluder for leading the response and singled out Captain Moore and Officer Ergle for their presence at the high school during the week. He also recognized the school resource officers for their work calming students and staff, saying the department was prepared to respond to potential threats and to help reassure the community.
Board members including Alderwoman Gail Mull, Alderman Hamlett, Alderwoman Proctor and Alderman Shepard thanked staff for the police presence and for the recently held Labor Day Festival. Recreation Director Sam Dunbar confirmed fall park hours for Chestnut Mountain would be dawn to dusk and said winter hours will depend on weather.
