Board asks General Assembly to exempt King and Queen County from library-board requirement in Va. Code §42.1-36

On Aug. 14 the King and Queen County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution requesting that the General Assembly amend Va. Code §42.1‑36 to add King and Queen County to the list of localities exempt from the statutory requirement to have a separate library board.
County Administrator Vivian Seay said the request follows the county’s decision to exit the Pamunkey Regional Library System and the county’s intention to provide library services through a county department rather than a separate board. The resolution notes Va. Code §42.1‑35 ordinarily vests library management in a board of trustees but that §42.1‑36 allows for statutory exemptions in specified counties; the Board asked to be added to that exemption list.
The motion to adopt the resolution passed unanimously.
