Summary
The King and Queen County Board of Supervisors voted to set an Oct. 10 public hearing on CUP21-02 and SP21-05, a proposed mining project on Devils Three Jump Road, after several Stevensville District residents urged the board not to approve the project citing truck traffic and proximity to a church and elderly residents.
The King and Queen County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 18 voted to set a public hearing for Oct. 10 on CUP21-02 and SP21-05, a proposed mining operation on Devils Three Jump Road, after multiple residents spoke in opposition.
During the public comment period, Stevensville District resident Carol Holmes asked the board “please not approve” the project. Marcelus Dungee asked whether the board would set a hearing date and said he opposed the mine. Julia Redd said the area already has “enough trouble with trucks on the road” and criticized the additional traffic for making the roads “all bumped up.” Sandra Burrell noted elderly residents and a nearby church in the Little Plymouth area and urged the board not to approve the operation.
County Administrator Vivina Seay told supervisors the applicant had requested a deferral of the public hearing; board members said they understood the applicant may wish to re-evaluate the proposal but agreed the public deserves notice of the schedule. The board voted to set the hearing on Oct. 10; AYES were S. C. Alsop, R. F. Bailey Jr., and J. M. Burns; J. L. Simpkins voted NAY; D. H. Morris was absent.
A written report from the Virginia Department of Transportation was noted; no VDOT representative attended the meeting.
Why it matters: The hearing will be the next formal opportunity for the public and the board to hear details of the applicant’s proposals and any staff or agency reviews. Opponents at Monday’s meeting focused on increased truck traffic, road wear and risks to nearby elderly residents and a church.
The board’s action only schedules the hearing; no permit or conditional-use decision was made on Sept. 18. The application remains under review and interested residents were advised to appear on Oct. 10 to make their views known.
