Board agrees to begin library hiring process, allows school division to retain totaled bus for parts

County staff told the King and Queen County Board of Supervisors on May 22 that work is under way to separate the county library from the Pamunkey Regional Library system and to stand up the library as a county department. Ms. Seay said staff has met with Pamunkey system administrators, gathered operational information from other libraries and vendors, and recommended beginning the hiring process for a Grade 7 library director with a salary range of $60,000 to $80,000; the board gave consensus to proceed.
Separately, Tina Ammons, Director of Finance, reported the school division’s bus was declared a total loss by VACORP after colliding with multiple deer; the estimate for a replacement bus is about $145,000 while the budgeted amount is $100,000. The board agreed to allow the school division to retain the totaled bus for parts and to use approximately $5,000 from the school capital fund toward the replacement shortfall.
Other administrative and project items were discussed: Skanska provided updates on modular classroom and KQES construction, the telework center and fire department work; staff reported a new software purchase with a first-year cost of $7,800 and an approximate ongoing annual cost of $7,000; the board indicated consensus to renew Skanska’s contract as it nears expiration. The King and Queen Women’s Club requested county internet access in exchange for periodic courthouse use; staff said the club is agreeable to that arrangement.
The board provided direction for staff to continue engagement on library operations and project coordination; no final budget amendment for the library or school bus replacement was recorded in the minutes.
