Board approves deed and corrected lease to secure federal grant for telework center

The King and Queen County Board of Supervisors on May 22 approved placing a deed of trust on county property and a corrected lease and easement tied to a federally funded telework center, actions the Economic Development Administration requires as conditions of its grant.
Ms. Seay, the county administrator, told the board the deed of trust is a standard EDA requirement and that language in the original Riverstreet lease for a fiber hub had been found to be incorrect; the corrected lease and easement address that error. Chairman Russell F. Bailey Jr. opened both public hearings; no members of the public spoke.
Mr. J.M. Burns moved to approve the deed of trust and later moved to approve the corrected lease and easement; Mr. J.L. Simpkins seconded both motions. In each case the board voted AYES: J.L. Simpkins, R.F. Bailey, S.C. Alsop, J.M. Burns; NAYS: none; ABSENT: D.H. Morris.
The board’s approval clears a procedural hurdle necessary for the telework center to receive EDA grant funds, according to Ms. Seay, and corrects the record related to Riverstreet’s fiber hub agreement.
The county previously identified the telework center as an infrastructure and economic development priority; county staff said further project updates will be provided as construction and grant compliance proceed. The board did not set additional conditions or deadlines during the hearing.
