Chairman Justin Staten heard an update Feb. 5 from Ryan Tuten, who represents the Boys & Girls Club, that the organization plans a soft opening for the Echols County site on April 6, 2026, the Monday following spring break. Mr. Tuten said staffing for the facility is underway and that Second Harvest will provide meals and other community organizations will supply additional resources.
Mr. Tuten told the board the program intends to run several summer camps and expects to serve about 40–50 children during the April soft opening, with a goal of reaching 80–100 children once the school year resumes. The board did not take a vote on the item; the report was received as information.
Charlene Davis, who attended on behalf of the South Georgia Community Service Board’s Legacy Behavioral Health & Developmental Disabilities Advisory Council, reported she had attended her first board meeting and said Echols County was the first county to receive a mobile health-care unit. Davis added that the advisory council expressed interest in coordination with the Boys & Girls Club to assist children if needs arise.
The county’s next steps are staffing the facility, confirming meal logistics with Second Harvest and preparing for the April soft opening date. No formal action or funding allocations were recorded in the minutes.
