Cusseta–Chattahoochee work session reviews broadband fiber plan, LMIG funding and solid-waste bids

County officials reviewed several operational items at a June 24, 2024 work session, including a carrier plan to install fiber across much of the county, locally awarded road funds, cemetery finishing work and pending solid-waste contract decisions.
Pam Burgamy asked for permission to use a piece of county property adjacent to the library for an ADA-compliant community garden and fenced reading area for children; commissioners said they would place the request on a future agenda if required for a formal vote. Public Works reported the cemetery’s final hydroseeding step will complete that project this week.
County Manager Thomas Weaver said Charter/Spectrum and Bingham Construction plan to install fiber across about 90% of the county with service projected to begin in mid-December. Weaver also reported receipt of a $155,000 Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) check and that the supplemental application was approved, bringing the total LMIG awards to roughly $355,000.
The work session reviewed three solid-waste bids and instructed staff to bring an award recommendation to the July agenda: GFL quoted $20 per month with a $5 per-tire charge; Jones Sanitation quoted $23.50 per month; Zero Waste quoted $25.52 per month. Commissioners discussed options for cardboard compactors and possible revenue from baled cardboard.
No final solid-waste contract was approved at the work session; commissioners directed staff to add the item to the next regular meeting agenda for formal action.
