Chairman Charles Coffey acknowledged the appointment and asked commissioners to thank Ms. Wilson for volunteering. Coffey also put on the record a potential ethics issue raised in open session: "Commissioner Hoyte, you are suing Ms. Sheila Wilson, therefore you being the plaintiff and suing her, I'd advise again, it is a potential violation of ethics, to be involved with someone that you are suing," Coffey said during the meeting. Hoyte had also asked that the appointment be tabled so the commission could consider additional applicants who had recently applied.
The resolution accompanying the minutes states the county is authorized by "State Statute" to appoint members to the Board of Tax Assessors and records Ms. Wilson's term as July 1, 2025 to July 1, 2029. The meeting minutes describe a recorded opposition by Commissioner Hoyte; the printed resolution packet language accompanying the minutes lists the appointment language in the formal resolution document. The minutes do not list a formal roll-call tally by name beyond the recorded opposition but identify the motion/second on the record and that Commissioner Frost was absent.
The board vacancy had been open for approximately two years, County Clerk Lisa Bickel told the commission; additional applicants mentioned on the record included Latrese Brown and Elizabeth DeMunn. The commission approved Ms. Wilson and encouraged other applicants to consider future service on county boards.
What happens next: the resolution was approved at the July 1 meeting and is included in the meeting packet. The Board of Tax Assessors will have Ms. Wilson in Post 2 through July 1, 2029, per the resolution language.
