At a March 25 work session County Manager Thomas Weaver told commissioners the county received a local road assistance grant that piggybacks the LMIG award, which will allow additional road repairs. Weaver cited past work on McGlaun Road and portions of Smith Road (reworked in 2017 with number‑seven stone) and said sections now need renewed attention; he identified Liberty Hill Road and Wells Street as having required riprap and repairs during recent maintenance. Weaver said approximately $190,000 was available to help with Liberty Hill and Riverbend Road projects, and he flagged Riverbend as a candidate for regional funding or TSPLOST coordination.
Weaver also updated the board on a landfill repair and the installation of a new air‑conditioning unit in one county building, and said the 2025 SPLOST account has begun receiving revenue. Recreation director Mordie Askew and Community Development staffer Samantha Hedgecoke provided department updates, including a community rabies clinic scheduled for April 5, and upcoming 4‑H and car show events.
Planning and zoning items were discussed for referral: the county attorney will attend the March 27 Planning & Zoning meeting to clarify the Conditional Use Permit process; cemetery bylaws work was assigned to county staff and the attorney for further drafting. Weaver told the board he will pair the county attorney with community development staff to clarify committee terms and the cemetery‑bylaws process.
On budgeting, Weaver presented a list of proposed quarterly amendments—six items totaling approximately $294,725—to address unbudgeted property tax reimbursements, EMS salaries, prisoner housing costs, legal services (noted as elevated because of pending litigation), library bookkeeping corrections, and a coroner salary correction; staff recommended drawing the funds from reserve. The commissioners directed staff to prepare the formal amendment documents for the upcoming April 1 regular meeting.
The Friendship Road LMIG item that was tabled at the March 4 regular meeting remains on the work session agenda for technical review and bid packet preparation. No formal votes were recorded on these work‑session items; the work session produced direction to prepare items for the April 1 meeting.
