Commission orders sheriff to return truck after vehicle-use dispute, calls for vehicle-use policy

Chattahoochee County commissioners signaled they will formalize vehicle custody rules after a dispute in which a recently purchased county truck was removed to the sheriff's property without completing county inspection, insurance and registration procedures.
During the Jan. 26 work session and executive session, commissioners discussed the circumstances: County Manager Thomas Weaver said a truck purchased by the county was taken by the sheriff before it had been inspected, titled or insured. Commissioners said the vehicle remained county property until formally assigned. Chairman Charles Coffey and Commissioner Jason Frost said the county must protect county property and set clear custodial procedures.
The commission entered executive session at 10:08 a.m. to discuss personnel and legal matters and reconvened at 11:39 a.m. On the record Chairman Coffey directed the sheriff to return the truck (or the truck promised in trade) to the county manager's office by noon Friday; commissioners said they would pursue the matter further if the vehicle was not returned. The board also agreed to place a draft county-vehicle policy on a future meeting agenda for formal consideration.
Commissioners framed the action as a custodial, administrative step rather than a punitive measure; they asked staff to prepare a policy that clarifies procurement, assignment, inventory, insurance and disposal procedures for county vehicles.
