Chattahoochee County selects engineers for sewer and SEID grants, tables public-safety radio upgrade

The Chattahoochee County Board of Commissioners approved engineering firms for two grant applications and agreed to delay a proposed public-safety radio upgrade while staff obtains a revised price and explores funding options.
At the board's Jan. 6 regular meeting, commissioners voted unanimously to select Barge Design as the engineer for a sewer grant and EMC as the engineer for the SCRC SEID 2025 grant. Commissioners also approved a planning- and zoning-technical assistance contract with the River Valley Regional Commission (RVRC). Motions to approve those firms were made by Commissioner Timothy Biddle and seconded by Commissioner Jason Frost; the motions passed by unanimous votes of the commissioners present.
During the same meeting, Mr. Sullivan of Southern Link demonstrated two radio models for the commission in the presence of the sheriff and Chief Deputy Williamson. Commissioners discussed coverage trade-offs and heard that existing repeaters and antennas would likely remain necessary as backups. Concerned about cost and how to support the fire department, Commissioner Frost pressed staff on where funding would come from. The board moved, by unanimous vote, to table the radio procurement until staff returns with a revised quote and possible grant options.
County Manager Thomas Weaver said he would seek a quote from Motorola and look into public-safety grant opportunities, and commissioners suggested exploring repeater-sharing with neighboring Stewart County. The board agreed to revisit the item at a called meeting or upcoming work session.
The actions taken on engineer selection and approval of the RVRC contract will allow staff to proceed with grant application preparation. The board did not authorize purchase of radio equipment at this meeting.
