Board adopts zoning and shoreland ordinance changes, approves DNR fire warden list; consent items passed

On Feb. 17 the Marquette County Board approved a zoning amendment to rezone 41 acres in the Town of Newton, amended shoreland protection language in Chapter 63, and approved the 2026 DNR emergency fire warden list; the zoning and shoreland changes were adopted on the consent agenda.
The Marquette County Board of Supervisors approved several consent-agenda items at its Feb. 17 meeting, including Resolution No. 2-2026 (a zoning amendment for the Town of Newton) and Resolution No. 3-2026 (revisions to Chapter 63 — Shoreland Protection).
Resolution No. 2-2026, introduced by Supervisors David Benson and Kathy Jo Locke, would "Rezone 41 acres to AG-2" for tax parcels in the Town of Newton; the Planning & Zoning Committee held a public hearing and recommended the change. The resolution recites that the land is better suited for the proposed use and that the rezoning is consistent with applicable town and county comprehensive plans.
Resolution No. 3-2026, also introduced by Benson and Locke, amends Marquette County Code of Ordinances Chapter 63 to clarify shoreland protections. Among the changes, the text replaces prior language with a clarified prohibition: "All land disturbing activities are prohibited within 35 feet of a wetland boundary." The Planning & Zoning Committee and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Shoreland Management Program reviewed the revisions; a public hearing was held prior to the committee recommendation.
Also approved was the 2026 Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Emergency Fire Warden list; Chairperson Ken Borzick introduced the list and the board approved it on a Walters/Sorensen motion and second.
Other routine business: motions to approve the agenda and the minutes of the Jan. 20 meeting were carried; Planning & Zoning Chair Judi Nigbor reported that a consultant has been hired to complete the county Comprehensive Plan with grant funding. Administrator Ron Barger reported that two budget options for 2027 have been forwarded to the Executive & Finance Committee for further discussion.
The transcript records no roll-call vote for the zoning and shoreland items separately because they were adopted under the consent agenda motion; the transportation resolution (Resolution No. 4-2026) was adopted separately (see separate article).
