King and Queen County supervisors used their Jan. 23 meeting to address several administrative and planning matters beyond the modular classroom purchase and EDA deed.
Vivian Seay presented two proposals from Kelly Evko for an economic development strategic plan; both called for a six-month planning period and the board agreed to forward the proposals to the county Economic Development Authority for approval. Seay also advised the board the Health Department has approximately $3,000 in FY22 carryover funds and the board consented to let the department use those funds to cover mandatory 5% state salary increases for FY23.
Seay presented a spreadsheet showing options for adjusting the tax levy to account for inflation since the last reassessment; she said the change would be about five cents as an illustration. Board members discussed how they have set the tax rate in prior years and what steps would be needed to equalize for reassessment.
Seay told the board that a school well replacement will now exceed the previously authorized $100,000 because the contractor identified a need for additional pumps during transition; she said she would review the procurement and return with a recommendation. The board approved January 2023 recurring warrants subject to audit. Board members also asked staff to check on county gateway signs and requested updates on the firehouse project and communication with Central King and Queen Fire Department.
A motion to adjourn was made by Mr. Burns and seconded by Ms. Morris; the meeting ended at 7:50 p.m.
