King and Queen to open county library in February; Board authorizes $25,000 starter collection

Erin Lazar, Director of Community Programming, told the Board that Pamunkey Regional Library closed the King and Queen branch on Dec. 31 and staff are preparing to open the new King and Queen County Library in February. Lazar said Phase I will provide computers, meeting rooms and library cards while staff build the collection with citizen input; Phase II will focus collection development with roughly 70% children’s books and 30% adult books. A grand reopening is planned for July 1.
Lazar told the Board the Economic Development Authority provided funding to rekey the building to match the county administration building’s key fob system, and staff have created a cash‑box policy for revenue generated at the library. She asked the Board to authorize $25,000 to place an initial order of books for the collection; the Board approved the purchase unanimously.
Lazar also reported volunteers willing to serve on a county library oversight board and the Board appointed a six‑member King and Queen County Library board: Adrienne Berard, Kim Carlton, Beth Hayes, Patricia Simpkins, Biddy Walker and Annie Carter.
Board members emphasized community input into collection development and welcomed the reopening schedule. The county will allow continued use of PRL services through June 30 but noted PRL policy will end access after that date.
