King and Queen County Board reorganizes for 2024, approves routine warrants and appointments

The King and Queen County Board of Supervisors reorganized for 2024 at its Jan. 8 regular meeting, electing Lawrence Simpkins as chairman and Sherrin Alsop as vice chair and adopting a resolution that sets regular meetings for the second Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
The Board approved routine business including the Nov. 27 and Dec. 11, 2023 minutes, county warrants and payroll (subject to audit), and a quarterly appropriation of $98,874.94 to the School Food Services Fund. The minutes approval passed with one abstention by Mark Berry on an earlier item; other motions passed unanimously where recorded.
Board members also approved a resolution that fixes meeting dates for 2024 and establishes a procedure to continue meetings if hazardous weather or other conditions prevent attendance; the Board adjusted October and November dates to avoid Columbus Day and the VACo conference. Vivian Seay was reappointed as Clerk of the Board and Tina Ammons as Deputy Clerk for 2024.
On administrative changes, the Board approved shifting CSA (Comprehensive Services Act) signing authority from the DSS Director to the Chair and Vice Chair of the CPMT after CPMT Chair Tina Ammons explained Ms. Betty Dougherty is no longer serving on the CPMT.
The Board set Feb. 12, 2024, as the public hearing date for two Planning Commission‑recommended applications from Nutrien Ag Solutions (CUP23‑01 and SP23‑01). Several appointments to county boards and commissions were confirmed, including the reappointment of Jonathan Massey to the Planning Commission, the appointment of Marie Norman and Mark Berry as the county’s MPPDC representatives, Carolyn Billups as the VPPSA alternate, and Thomas Adkins to the Board of Zoning Appeals. The Public Access Authority appointment to replace Doris Morris was tabled.
