During the April 8 King and Queen County Board of Supervisors meeting, Lee McKnight with the Virginia Department of Transportation provided a project update and timetable for local roadwork.
McKnight said paving season will begin soon with planned paving on Routes 33 and 360 and resurfacing on secondary roads following. He reported that funding for unpaved roads is programmed through 2029 and that a bridge replacement on Rt. 628 (Spring Cottage Road) will be advertised this month; construction will begin after contract award. McKnight also said pipe replacements on Rt. 14 and other secondary roads are scheduled for this summer.
Supervisors raised a range of follow-up requests. Mr. Berry asked for staff guidance on pursuing No Thru Truck restrictions on several roads including Mt. Elba. Ms. Billups requested a timeframe for paving on Rt. 33 and asked that potholes on Indian Neck Road and Bradley Farm Road be addressed. Chairman J.L. Simpkins asked VDOT to investigate standing water at the intersection of Rt. 360 and Rt. 721, which he said is causing pavement deterioration. Ms. Norman asked for clarification about why some unpaved-road projects are not scheduled to begin until 2026; McKnight attributed timing to funding allocations and the requirement that entire paving projects be funded before work begins.
VDOT will attend the county’s May meeting for the Secondary Six-Year Plan adoption; the board discussed but did not require a public hearing for that item if state guidance deems one unnecessary.
