Suffolk Legislature approves Home Rule Message requesting DOT grant easement to MTA for Port Jefferson-area property

The Suffolk County Legislature on June 12 approved Home Rule Message No. 4-2025, asking the New York State Department of Transportation to grant a permanent access and construction easement to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority for property associated with the Port Jefferson branch. The measure cites Senate Bill S.8349A and Assembly Bill A.8560A.
Legislator Mazzarella moved the measure; Legislator Englebright seconded. Legislator Richberg thanked colleagues and county Economic Development staff and praised the County Executive for supporting the effort: "I want to thank my colleagues and our team over at Economic Development for getting us to this point. I want to thank the County Executive for pushing this through," Richberg said. He also referenced long-standing contamination at the site and praised Land Bank involvement.
Presiding Officer McCaffrey commented on possible longer-term transit implications: "This is maybe the beginning of the electrification of that Port Jefferson branch," he said.
Legislator Richberg also announced he would cosponsor the measure. Clerk Guy Calla announced the vote as "Seventeen" in favor (Absent: Legislator Gonzalez), and the Home Rule Message was approved.
The approved Home Rule Message asks the State to consider the cited bills; it does not itself change property ownership or grant easements. Any grant of easement or project related to electrification would require separate approvals by state agencies and the MTA.
