The Buffalo County Board of Commissioners met June 14 in Kearney and handled a series of routine administrative and oversight items.
The board approved the May 24, 2022 meeting minutes and ratified payroll claims processed June 3. Commissioners adopted Resolution 2022-23, commending Candra Michel for 44 years of service as Motor Vehicle Clerk in the Assessor’s Office. The board accepted the County Treasurer’s May 2022 fund balance report, the Clerk of District Court’s May report, and the April 2022 RYDE report from Community Action Partnership of Mid-Nebraska.
During the regular agenda the board approved Special Designated Liquor Licenses (SDLs) for The Village 1919 and multiple dates for 2KRD2 Inc. DBA Axes Gibbon (one recorded abstention by Commissioner Lynch on Axes Gibbon approvals). The board also approved a manager application for Brandon Garrels for Fort Kearney Trading Post Inc.
As the Board of Equalization, members approved permissive exemption waiver requests (including The World Theatre, Faith Christian School, University of Nebraska at Kearney) and authorized the County Assessor to proceed with exemption consideration; a public hearing on exemptions was scheduled for June 28. The board approved multiple valuation changes and numerous motor-vehicle tax exemptions submitted by County Treasurer Jean Sidwell for organizations including Catholic High School of Kearney, Community Action Partnership of Mid Nebraska, New Life Assembly, Prairie View Gardens, Good Samaritan Society – St. John’s, and First Baptist Church of Kearney; where recorded, certain board members abstained on specific exemptions.
The board opened bids for jail food service (Consolidated Correctional Food Service and Summit submitted bids) and directed the Sheriff and staff to review the bids and report recommendations at the June 28 meeting. The board reappointed Buffalo County Public Defender Jeff Wirth to the Sheriff Merit Commission. Facility Director Steve Gaasch presented a $8,349.00 change order for the 610 Central Project, which the board approved, and the board set a county surplus auction for July 30, 2022, at 10:00 A.M. The board ratified a June 1, 2010 fifty-year lease involving the Village and Township of Elm Creek and Buffalo County via Resolution 2022-25.
The board entered and exited executive sessions to discuss an inter-department transfer and later personnel/performance-plan matters; after the latter session the board authorized Deputy County Attorney Kari Fisk to meet with an employee regarding a performance plan. No public commenters spoke during the Citizen’s Forum. The meeting adjourned at 11:43 A.M.; the next regular meeting was scheduled for June 28, 2022 at 9:00 A.M.
