Greer County commissioners elect chair and vice‑chair, appoint purchasing agent and hear sheriff briefing

At the Jan. 5 meeting the Greer County Board of Commissioners elected Mark Barnes chairman and Steven Fite vice‑chair, appointed County Clerk Tiffany Buchanan as purchasing agent, approved routine claims and resolutions, and received an update from Sheriff Steve McMahan on jail and county crime.
Brent York called the Greer County Board of Commissioners to order at 9:00 a.m. on Jan. 5, 2026, noting advance notice had been posted Dec. 31, 2025. Commissioners Mark Barnes, Steven Fite and Brent York were present along with County Clerk Tiffany Buchanan and Commissioners’ Secretary Shelby Monroe.
In the first business of the meeting, Brent York moved to elect Mark Barnes as chairman; Steven Fite seconded and the board voted unanimously in favor. York then moved to elect Steven Fite as vice‑chairman; the motion likewise carried by unanimous vote.
The board approved minutes from the Dec. 29, 2025 regular meeting and the monthly minutes for December 2025. Commissioners also appointed Tiffany Buchanan, the county clerk, as the county’s Purchasing Agent by unanimous vote.
The board agreed to meet with OSU Extension Coordinator Cheryl Lively. Shelby Monroe provided an update on the Extension office staffing: an OSU position remains open, and the Extension office would be closed for the remainder of the week for a training conference.
Sheriff Steve McMahan briefed the commissioners on county‑wide crime trends, jail staffing and transports, and provided an update on activity from New Year’s Eve. Following the briefing, the board approved the Sheriff’s Boarding of Prisoners Report.
Commissioners approved a set of administrative resolutions and routine financial items, including reimbursements, signature authorizations for county bank accounts, a budget balance resolution and a notice of filing period for Fair Board directors. The board also approved the Quarterly Internal Control Checklist, designated requisitioning and receiving officers for 2025, and authorized payment of a list of purchase orders and claims covering multiple departments.
The minutes show a list of vendor payments and claims, including a $25,500 REAP payment to Altus Motor Sports; the record lists many smaller payments across Health, Highway, Sheriff and General Government accounts. The board approved County Officers’ monthly reports, an Election Board reimbursement claim, the allocation of Alcoholic Beverage and Motor Vehicle taxes, and routine appropriations.
The agenda included an item related to a proposed 80‑bed Law Enforcement Center, but the minutes state no action was taken on that matter during the meeting. Brent York moved that the board request the Excise Board to appropriate funds; the motion carried. With no action on Roads & Bridges and no new business, the board recessed the meeting at 10:45 a.m.
