Montevallo council accepts park-bench donation, appoints delegate and a historical commissioner, hears police, fire and community reports

The Montevallo City Council on Feb. 9 accepted several routine items and heard community updates. The council voted unanimously to accept a donation of three park benches from the Alabama Ornithological Society for placement in Shoal Creek Park, appointed voting delegates and alternates for the Alabama League of Municipalities' annual business meeting, and approved the appointment of Joyce Lewis to the Historical Preservation Commission (term to expire Feb. 29, 2029). Motions were recorded as unanimous "All Ayes."
Council received public safety reports: Chief Burr reported 93 total police reports as of Jan. 26, 2026 (70 criminal cases and 23 non-criminal reports) and Chief Davis reported 137 fire and rescue calls in January. During public comment, C.P. Pierson asked what a "lift assist" means; Chief Davis explained it is the assistance provided when a resident has fallen and cannot get up without help.
Sarah Hogan Shaw, program director for Impact Montevallo, thanked the Montevallo Legacy Project for a Black History Month event that recognized youth artists and said Impact will send staff to the 2nd Annual Prevention Day at the Capitol on March 11. "We have one of the artists with us - our Junior Mayor, Ms. Mary Elizabeth House," Shaw told the council, and she previewed planned mentoring trainings and upcoming SRO Appreciation Day activities on Feb. 15.
Library director Marissa Wilson reported 2,831 building visits in January, 683 program participants and 47 programs; the Montevallo Chamber and Main Street representatives provided event and business-development updates in the council packet. Mayor Rusty Nix called for adjournment at 6:19 p.m.; the motion to adjourn was approved unanimously.
Next steps: park staff and the donor will coordinate delivery and placement logistics for the benches; the finance department will proceed with any administrative steps required by the council's other motions.
