Montevallo council hears public-safety and community updates; Impact Montevallo to present at state conference

At its Jan. 26 meeting the Montevallo City Council heard a series of departmental and community reports that the mayor and council described as routine updates.
Chief Burr told the council the police department recorded 50 reports as of Jan. 23 and provided a breakdown of arrests and citations in Appendix 1. Fire Chief Brad Davis reported 59 calls from Jan. 1–15, 2026, including 38 EMS responses (Appendix 2). City public-works staff reported no major road issues from recent winter weather after sanding and salting trouble spots.
Sarah Hogan Shaw, program director for Impact Montevallo, said the coalition has verified representatives for the 12 community sectors required by its CDC grant and noted the group will participate in the Alabama School of Alcohol and Other Drug Studies conference in March; SRO David Holloway is listed as the lead presenter in the packet. Shaw also described planned outreach (window posters at a vacant storefront) and scheduled the next coalition meeting for Feb. 3. Shaw included a set of legislative and news updates in her report; those notes presented federal and state actions as Impact summarized them (the council did not verify those external legislative claims during the meeting).
Courtney Bennett, Montevallo Main Street executive, presented the 2025 annual report: 35 volunteers provided 5,291 hours, six new businesses joined the district and several events are planned, including the Monte Gras Ball fund-raiser on Feb. 7. Adele Nelson of the Montevallo Chamber of Commerce announced the Chamber’s Business Basics series with the UM College of Business, the 4th Annual Montevallo Community Grant opening Feb. 1 (application details in Appendix 5), and other upcoming events.
Council acknowledged these informational reports but did not take substantive policy action on them during the meeting.
The council presented an Arbor Day proclamation (Mayor Rusty Nix presented the proclamation to Arbor Board Chair John McKinnon) and accepted a public comment from C.P. Pierson thanking officials for participation in the recent MLK Jr. celebration.
Next steps: Impact Montevallo will appear at the statewide conference in March per its invitation; the City will maintain the departmental reports and community packets in its records.
