Union County chairman lays out 2026 theme and priorities, including semiquincentennial programming and memorial enhancements

Chairman Joseph C. Bodek used his inaugural annual message at the Jan. 1 reorganization meeting to present the board’s 2026 theme and policy priorities.

"Union County 2026: Honoring the Past, Strengthening Our Tomorrow," Bodek said, explaining that the year would focus on strengthening existing county programs rather than pursuing broad new initiatives. He highlighted planned investments in parks and recreation, expanded support services for seniors, environmental stewardship including tree planting and recycling initiatives, and enhanced commemoration of national anniversaries.

Bodek called 2026 a ‘‘defining year’’ that includes the United States’ 250th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11. He said Union County would offer educational and community programming to engage residents with local Revolutionary War history and would thoughtfully enhance the area surrounding a county 9/11 memorial to honor those lost and those affected by subsequent illnesses.

He framed the year as one of stewardship and continuity: preserving and improving services such as senior nutrition, transportation programs, and parks maintenance while strengthening emergency response outreach and preparedness. He thanked county staff, County Manager Edward T. Oatman and Deputy County Manager Amy C. Wagner, and emphasized cooperation with municipal and state partners.

Bodek closed by reaffirming his commitment to serving residents and honoring the county’s past as the foundation for future work: "I am honored to serve as Chairman of the Union County Board of County Commissioners, and I look forward to the year ahead. Thank you."
