County board backs creation of six-county Middle Peninsula Economic Development District

The King and Queen County Board adopted a resolution supporting designation of a six-county Middle Peninsula Economic Development District to be served by the MPPDC, revising earlier 2021 support that had lapsed during federal review.
County Administrator Vivian Seay told the board the process to form a Middle Peninsula Economic Development District (EDD) began in 2021 but earlier resolutions became stale during federal review and needed to be updated. The board voted to adopt a resolution supporting designation of a six-county EDD to serve Essex, Gloucester, King and Queen, King William, Mathews and Middlesex counties and to work with the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission (MPPDC) on regional economic development planning.
The resolution states the MPPDC and the region meet U.S. Economic Development Administration eligibility measures and endorses the EDA’s expressed willingness to create the district. The board recorded ayes in favor and no nays; one member, Sherrin Alsop, was absent.
Supporters said the designation would help the region build planning and technical capacity, attract private investment and higher-skill jobs, and better coordinate public and private efforts across the six counties. The resolution directs county participation and collaboration with neighboring localities and the MPPDC.
