Bedford County commissioners reappoint county solicitor, confirm board assignments; Winck urges more meetings

Commissioners Stiles, Winck and Baughman reappointed Attorney Dean Crabtree as Bedford County solicitor for one year and approved a slate of commissioner appointments to county and regional boards at the Jan. 13 meeting.
The board voted to reappoint Crabtree on the recommendation of the commissioners. Commissioner Winck said Crabtree "prefers issues only regarding contracts and/or election issues; he does not like to do any type of litigation or contract bargaining with the unions, labor issues throughout the year or Right to Know issues," adding that is why the county also uses Pittsburgh firm Campbell and Durrant for certain matters. The motion to reappoint was seconded by Commissioner Baughman and approved by the board.
The commissioners then approved a motion appointing the three commissioners as members or alternates to a series of agencies and advisory groups, including the Area Agency on Aging; South Central Solid Waste Agency; Bedford County Economic Development Association; the Retirement Board; Developmental and Behavioral Health Services (DBHS) and its advisory board; Southern Alleghenies Planning & Development committees (executive, finance, personnel and board); Bedford County Library Board; Bedford County Visitors Bureau; and Bedford County Airport Authority. Commissioner Winck noted for the public's information that these meetings occur at varying times and some outside the county; Commissioner Baughman said participation allows commissioners to hear community needs and develop relationships with partner organizations.
Near the end of the meeting Commissioner Winck asked that it be placed on the record that he would like to see two committee meetings per month, saying more frequent meetings "would allow more people to come hear what's going on and be involved in public discussion" and could lead to timelier resolution of issues. The board approved the appointments and other routine governance motions during the session.
The board adjourned at 10:18 a.m.; the next regular meeting is scheduled for Feb. 10, 2026, in Room 101 of the Bedford County Government Building.
