Deuel County approves road maintenance purchases and secures one BIG bridge grant

The Deuel County Board of Commissioners approved a series of highway maintenance expenditures and received notice of a bridge grant award at its March 3 meeting.
Highway Superintendent Jamie Broksieck presented a quote for a half-semi load of crack sealant, approximately $15,000; the board approved the purchase by motion of Steve Rhody, seconded by Scott Fieber. The board also approved purchasing pea rock for chip sealing—Broksieck estimated roughly $91,000 for 32 miles of chip sealing (the county completed 40 miles the prior year); the motion to purchase pea rock passed (mover: Harry Mewherter; second: Judith Homan).
Broksieck said Banner Associates projected $264,762 for a 309 stabilization project with most cost attributed to subbase and gravel surfacing, and noted the county already has gravel and subbase material so those items will be removed from the bid estimate before advertising. He said the county will put the project out to bid and do hauling in-house.
On bridge funding, Broksieck reported the statewide BIG round received 57 applications with about $14 million available for $75.6 million requested; Deuel County had two applications and received funding for structure 20-008-220 (Hidewood) in the amount of $1,122,400. He said the county will submit three bridge applications this fall to improve chances for future funding.
The board also authorized advertising for bid letting the weeks of March 16 and 23, with bids to be opened after 10:00 AM on April 7.
