County staff to study cemetery lot-size exemption after commissioners raise concern

Charlotte County staff will search for example ordinances that exempt cemeteries from lot-size requirements after a request from the Board of Zoning Appeals and the Board of Supervisors, county officials said.
County Administrator Dan Witt told the Planning Commission that many lots used as cemeteries are currently subject to lot-size requirements and that staff is researching precedent ordinances that would exempt cemeteries. Commissioner Andy Carwile voiced concern that a blanket exemption could have the unintended consequence of allowing construction on otherwise undersized lots.
The commission did not take a formal vote on amending lot-size rules; staff will continue researching model language and report back to the BZA and Board of Supervisors as directed.
