Cherryville council directs staff to study dog park and practice field at Westgate Park

Cherryville City Council on March 8 directed staff to investigate whether Westgate Park has room for both a community dog park and a practice field.
Mayor H.L. Beam said he would like to repurpose or use Westgate Park for a dog park and provided photos and examples of facilities in nearby municipalities. City Clerk Paige Green reported the N.C. League of Municipalities estimated additional insurance coverage at about $345 per year and provided design and liability-mitigation suggestions including appropriate fencing, a double-gate entry and separate areas for small and large dogs.
Councilmember Malcolm Parker moved to direct staff to determine whether Westgate Park can accommodate both a dog park and a practice field; Councilmember Jill Puett seconded and the vote was unanimous. Public Works Director Brandon Abernathy will begin the review and report back to the mayor and council.
The council also noted a prior request from Will Puckett, president of the Little Ironmen, for a practice field at Westgate Park; the staff study will consider that prior request alongside dog-park design constraints and insurance guidance from NCLM.
