Local equine event organizers told the Roosevelt County Commission that the county’s indoor arena is difficult to maintain with the current tractor and drag, which they said creates slick conditions when watered and discourages competitors. Organizers recommended a larger tractor, a better levelling drag, a roster of trained tractor operators and adding bucking shoots to attract more events.
Commissioner Malin Parker had asked the organizers to attend and present those concerns. Alan Carter, a local resident, offered to loan a ripper to help prepare the arena for events. Commission and staff discussion acknowledged the recent improvements to the fairgrounds—additional horse stalls and new RV hookups—and focused on balancing maintenance costs with event revenue potential.
The commission approved Resolution 2025‑05, establishing a fee schedule for public use of the Roosevelt County fairgrounds that incorporates the new horse stalls and RV hook‑ups. Commissioners asked county staff to compare the adopted rates and rental contracts with other counties and return with recommendations for any future adjustments or capital requests.
The action was intended to standardize rental rates and support efforts to attract NMRA, Little Britches and high‑school rodeo events, but no immediate capital purchase for a new tractor or equipment was authorized at the meeting.
