RCCDC reports construction activity; commission approves mural and grant application pursuit

Jodi Diaz, executive director of the Roosevelt County Community Development Corporation, briefed the Roosevelt County Commission on recent local construction and business activity during the Jan. 6 meeting.
Diaz said construction has begun on a Cannon Federal Credit Union building on Kilgore, LEDA funds were awarded for a Mariposa independent senior-living facility near Good Life, land preparation has started for a new business near the Wells Fargo location, permits were approved for a Circle K near Walmart, there is a new retail business on Main Street, and a medical clinic on South Avenue D is open and serving patients. She said the RCCDC and the Chamber will hold their annual banquet Thursday, and staff are planning recruitment events in February and May and a hiring event in April. She also noted three projects remain in a non-disclosure stage and that grant work and land surveys are underway.
As a separate action, Diaz requested permission to paint a mural on the back of the enterprise center facing the farmers market and to pursue a LEADS grant to fund the mural plus phased upgrades such as shade structures and lighting. Commissioner Malin Parker asked the commission to review a draft design prior to installation; Diaz said commissioners would be shown a design. On a motion, the commission approved the mural request unanimously.
The approval allows the RCCDC to proceed with grant application work due in April 2026; design approval and implementation details will follow through staff coordination with the commission.
