Sierra County approves purchase of new fire engines; Las Palomas vehicle funded largely by grant

Sierra County commissioners on Jan. 27 approved purchases of new fire apparatus for volunteer departments in the county.
The board voted to approve a 2027 Rosenbauer 4x4 engine/pumper for the Hillsboro Fire Department. Separately, the commission approved purchase of a custom pumper (Model 22 Premier HME chassis) for the Las Palomas Volunteer Fire Department. Ryan Williams told the board he had secured a $600,000 grant toward the Las Palomas engine and said the balance would be covered by county capital outlay funds.
Why it matters: Replacing and upgrading volunteer fire apparatus affects emergency response capacity across rural parts of Sierra County. Grant funding reduces the county's capital burden, but commissioners and staff will need to manage remaining capital outlay contributions and equipment delivery timelines.
