Commission adopts charter amendment creating Board of Elections; names for new board proposed at work session

The ordinance text incorporates O.C.G.A. § 21-2-40.1 requirements: the locally appointed board will assume responsibilities of the election superintendent and board of registrars for primaries, elections and voter registration beginning Jan. 1, 2025. The ordinance specifies a three-member board of electors, staggered initial terms and prohibitions on board members simultaneously holding elective public office.
At a Nov. 25 work session, Vice-Chairman Timothy Biddle and County Manager Thomas Weaver discussed nominees to fill the staggered initial terms and added three proposed appointees to the Dec. 3 regular meeting agenda: Nancy Hoard, Valerie Lassiter and Crystal Walker. The county manager said nominees receive training and that voter-roll maintenance is performed daily by staff.
Why it matters: State law required counties where probate judges served as election superintendents to create boards of elections if they had not already done so; this ordinance implements that state requirement locally and sets the administrative structure for elections beginning Jan. 1, 2025.
What’s next: The Board placed the proposed nominees on the Dec. 3 agenda for formal appointment; the county manager said the county may set per-meeting pay for appointees and that the county will provide offices and equipment for the new board.
