At its June 24 work session the commission considered several operational items that will affect county services.
Library garden request: Pam Burgamy asked for permission to use county property beside the library to create an ADA‑compliant garden and outdoor storytime space using remaining construction funds and a new fence. Commissioners asked staff to verify the parcel is not needed for fire department expansion; if no conflict exists, the commission will place the request on a future vote.
Broadband/fiber update: County Manager Thomas Weaver said representatives from Charter, Spectrum and Bingham Construction plan to install fiber across the county and projected the system to be in service by mid‑December. "They project to be in service mid‑December," Weaver said, adding the initial route will pass through Fort Moore, Highway 26 and Industrial Park Road with coverage eventually reaching roughly 90% of the county.
Solid waste bids: Staff reviewed three bids for residential curbside collection discussed for placement on the July agenda: GFL at $20 per month with a $5 per tire charge, Jones Sanitation at $23.50 per month and Zero Waste at $25.52 per month. Commissioners asked staff to compile contract terms and return with an award recommendation.
Other updates: Weaver reported that ambulance fee collections have begun and that the county’s LMIG grant application was submitted and approved (combined LMIG and supplemental approximately $355,000). Public works reported cemetery hydroseeding is the final task before completion.
Next steps: The garden request and the solid‑waste contract award will be placed on the July regular meeting agenda for formal action. Staff will provide more detail on broadband routing and final bid comparisons.
