Cusseta–Chattahoochee staff propose welcome center, fishing pier and campsites using Hotel/Motel and SPLOST funds

At the July 28 work session County Manager Thomas Weaver outlined several tourism and SPLOST-funded projects he urged the Commission to advance.
Weaver said a city-hall room could be renovated into a welcome center for the Chamber of Commerce or other local partners, and that Riverbend Park needs repairs; he proposed adding a fishing pier to the left of the existing boat dock. Weaver also recommended adding usable campsites with power and septic hookups to attract overnight visitors, and installing two restrooms and a drinking fountain at the King Street basketball court.
Weaver told commissioners the current Hotel/Motel balance was $813,251.00 and that the county had already collected more than $500,000 in 2025 SPLOST receipts. He asked staff to obtain cost estimates for the city-hall repair, the fishing dock, campsite power, and restroom facilities and to bring quotes back to the Commission for possible use of Hotel/Motel or SPLOST funds.
Commissioners also discussed signage cleanup at county entrances and other small tourism projects; no final funding votes were taken at the work session, but the items were added to the Aug. 5 regular meeting agenda for further consideration.
