Cusseta–Chattahoochee commissioners appoint Sheila Wilson to tax assessors board; FLOST resolution tabled

The Cusseta–Chattahoochee County Commission on July 1 appointed Sheila Wilson to Post 2 of the Board of Tax Assessors for a four-year term beginning July 1, 2025.

Commissioner Gerald Douglas moved to appoint Wilson; Commissioner Timothy Biddle seconded. Chairman Charles Coffey and other commissioners voted to approve the appointment; Commissioner Damon Hoyte recorded his opposition. Commissioner Jason Frost was absent. The Commission noted the vacancy had been open for two years and staff were asked to thank other applicants who may apply for future openings.

The appointment followed discussion of applicants at the work session and a brief, sometimes tense exchange in which Chairman Coffey said the board must avoid conflicts of interest when considering candidates. The chair also urged courtesy among commissioners while the matter was addressed publicly.

Also on July 1 the Commission unanimously tabled a FLOST resolution until the required newspaper advertisement runs; commissioners said the ad must run for three weeks and two readings must be held at least a week apart before further action. The motion to table was made by Commissioner Biddle and seconded by Commissioner Douglas.

The board also unanimously approved a proclamation honoring Pam Burgamy for decades of service to the Chattahoochee Valley Library, including work on renovations and a reading garden. Commissioners noted a retirement celebration and thanked Burgamy for her contributions to the library and community.

The meeting opened at 9:00 a.m. and adjourned at 9:45 a.m. No other formal actions or ordinance adoptions were taken at the session; several items were scheduled for further review at the next work session and the Aug. 5 regular meeting.
