At the June 22 meeting staff presented Morgan Lumber's conditional use permit application to expand operations onto 59.42 acres made up of portions of Parcels 89-2-3, 89-2-5 and 89-2-6, located off Route 92 and Mosely Ferry Road (State Route 705) behind Morgan Lumber Company's existing site at 628 Jeb Stuart Highway.
The proposed development would include a 350-by-350-foot storage building and a staging area for truck loading and tarping. Commissioners voted to request a joint public hearing with the Board of Supervisors so both bodies could consider the application; the motion carried with all members present voting yes. Commissioner Kay Pierantoni, who is a non-voting member and not an owner of Morgan Lumber, abstained from participating in the discussion because she is closely related to the owners.
Staff also suggested adopting a second public comment period near the end of meetings to give citizens a dedicated opportunity for remarks; the commission adopted that procedural change. The commission was informed that Randolph Solar and Tall Pines Solar applications are under staff review, Ridgeway Farm's large-scale solar project is now operational, and Twitty's Creek Solar recently received landscaping plantings.
