The Gladwin County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 25 approved a $75,000 appropriation to the Probate Court Child Care Fund after Treasurer Christy VanTiem said previous allocations were insufficient to cover the fund through the end of the year.
VanTiem told the board the additional appropriation was necessary because the fund was at risk of running short. Commissioner Tom Winarski moved to appropriate $75,000; Commissioners Tami O'Donnell, Karen Moore, Winarski and Mike Visnaw voted in favor and Commissioner Alan Donaldson abstained, citing his employment with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
The board directed Probate Court to provide monthly financial reports to the County Treasurer and Deputy Administrator to improve budgeting and monitoring of the fund. No specific changes to program eligibility or operations were proposed at the meeting.
Next steps: County Treasurer Christy VanTiem and Deputy Administrator Melanie Thume will receive monthly fund reports from Probate Court to inform future budgets.
