Geneva County Commission approves Alabama Power easement for multipurpose arena, reappoints two SARCOA members

Geneva County Commission Chairman Toby Seay said construction of the county's multipurpose arena is continuing despite weather-related delays and the commission on Jan. 26 approved an underground easement request from Alabama Power to run electrical service to the site. The motion to approve a resolution granting the easement and to authorize the chairman to sign related documents passed 4-0.

Why it matters: securing electric service is a necessary step before final completion and occupancy of the arena, which county staff said still faces possible delays to concrete work due to recent weather.

The commission also handled several board appointments. Commissioners voted 4-0 to reappoint Toby Seay and Donna Buchanan to the Southeast Alabama Regional Solid Waste Disposal Authority (SARCOA) after Frances Hatcher requested not to be reappointed. The commission said it will seek a candidate to fill the remaining SARCOA seat. No action was taken at the meeting on the Geneva County Healthcare Authority Board appointment for John Box pending recommendations from the hospital, and Allen Brewer's expiring term on the regional solid waste authority will be considered later.

County Administrator Cindy Williams presented the ACCA legislative report and flagged House Bill 140, a measure addressing a family exception for county subdivision regulations; the commission discussed the bill but took no formal action at the Jan. 26 session.

The meeting agenda listed routine business and committee updates, and the commission completed the items noted above before moving on to infrastructure and personnel matters later in the meeting.
