Calhoun County Commission declares 12 properties public nuisances and dismisses five others

Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize told the Calhoun County Commission on Jan. 8 that staff recommended proceeding with abatement action on multiple properties and declaring a separate set of properties as public nuisances. The commission adopted both sets of resolutions by unanimous voice vote during the regular meeting.
Mize recommended pursuing abatements for four properties: 144 Overton Lake Rd., Jacksonville (owner: Edgar Buckhanan); 3517 Gurnee Ave., Anniston (owner: Donald V Barrett Jr); 3515 Gurnee Ave., Anniston (owner: Ulises Mora); and 13060 AL Hwy 9, Piedmont (owner: Melisa King Loyd). Commissioner Henderson moved to adopt the resolutions; Commissioner Shears seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Separately, Mize recommended that the commission declare the following 12 properties as public nuisances: 408 N Hunter St., Anniston (Johnnie Sue O'Bryen); 312 W. Blue Mountain, Anniston (Mohammad Wasif); 913 W 52nd St., Anniston (Walker & Maxine Graves); 1511 Pelham St., Anniston (Ginger L Parker); 4073 Pleasant Valley Rd., Jacksonville (Jesse Williams); 5605 Chandler St., Anniston (Carol S Brown Trust); 221 W 43rd St., Anniston (Lesley Johnson); 149 Craig Dr., Anniston (Selena Baxter); 161 Craig Dr., Anniston (Selena Baxter); 0 Craig Dr., Anniston (Joyce M Harper); 79 Fieldstone Way, Jacksonville (Brandon & Angela Frost); and 98 Phoenix Dr., Anniston (Land Home Properties LLC). Commissioner Henderson moved to declare the properties as recommended; Vice-Chairman Lee Patterson seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
The record notes that property owners were notified of the meeting but no owners or representatives attended to speak on their behalf. The resolutions adopted are retained in the county files.
