Buffalo County authorizes ARPA grants for local childcare program and Kearney Catholic athletics

The Buffalo County Board of Commissioners on July 9 authorized two American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant contracts to support local nonprofit services and school athletics.
The board voted to authorize Chairperson Ivan H. Klein to sign Resolution 2024-27, approving an ARPA agreement with Buffalo County Community Health Partners, Inc., to assist with the Childcare Champions program. Executive Director Denise Zwiener and Behavioral Health Coordinator Tana Miller attended to describe the request. According to the resolution, the county is allocating ARPA funds that address negative economic impacts from the COVID-19 public health emergency and to assist the nonprofit in delivering community-based childcare services. The motion was moved by Bill Maendele and seconded by Myron Kouba and passed on a roll-call vote with Lynch, Higgins, Kouba, Maendele, Loeffelholz, Morrow and Klein voting “Aye.”
The board also authorized Chairperson Klein to sign Resolution 2024-28, approving an ARPA agreement with the Kearney Catholic High School Foundation (KCHS) to assist payment for outdoor athletics programs and structures. Jonathan Nikkila, listed in the minutes as co-coach for the foundation, attended for that agenda item. The motion to approve the KCHS agreement was moved by Sherry Morrow, seconded by Daniel Lynch, and carried with the same recorded roll-call “Aye” votes.
The board tabled a separate ARPA grant contract with the Village of Shelton until the July 23 meeting.
