Charlotte County Planning Commission reviews draft comprehensive plan, seeks input from Amish elders

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, July 26, 2022 — The Charlotte County Planning Commission met in a work session at the Charlotte County Administration Office and reviewed draft Chapters 1 and 2 of the county’s comprehensive plan update.
Vice-Chairman Cornell Goldman called the session to order at 6:00 p.m. and Todd Fortune, deputy director of the Commonwealth Regional Council, presented the results of the citizen survey and a review of the two opening chapters. Fortune introduced Lauren Jones, who recently joined the regional council’s staff and will assist with the plan update.
During discussion, commissioners focused on how to represent the county’s Amish community in the draft. Fortune reported that Lauren Jones had obtained population estimates from Elizabethtown College based on the college’s compilation of newspaper notices; the commission agreed by consensus that staff should also seek direct input from Amish community elders about population counts, schools and businesses.
Commissioners asked staff to include out‑migration data in the demographic analysis if such data is available. Fortune cautioned that only limited 2020 U.S. Census data had been released at the time; where 2020 figures were unavailable, the draft relied on American Community Survey estimates or, where necessary, 2010 Census counts. He said the plan would be updated if additional 2020 Census releases were published.
The commission discussed the timeline for completing the update and scheduled the next work session for Aug. 23, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. The work session was then adjourned.
