Charlotte County planners review Comprehensive Plan updates, discuss outreach to Amish community

Vice-Chairman Cornell Goldman called the Charlotte County Planning Commission work session to order on Aug. 23, 2022, where representatives of the Commonwealth Regional Council reviewed recent revisions to the county’s draft Comprehensive Plan.
Todd Fortune, deputy director of the Commonwealth Regional Council, said changes to Chapter 2 include a migration chart and updated private-school data. Commissioners asked CRC staff to continue efforts to obtain a count of Charlotte County students attending Halifax Christian School to ensure the plan’s school enrollment figures are complete.
Mr. Fortune and county staff described a questionnaire being prepared for Amish elders to complete on behalf of the Amish community. According to the description provided at the meeting, the questionnaire will solicit information about population, schools and student population, local businesses, and transportation needs to better reflect the community in plan text and data.
Mr. Fortune reviewed the first half of draft Chapter 3, which focuses on housing and transportation. Commissioners and county staff flagged several maps for accuracy checks and recommended adding several trail systems and a local historic site to the plan’s maps and inventory. Staff also requested that transportation findings from the county’s citizen survey be incorporated into the chapter.
Mr. Fortune noted that a Board of Supervisors solar resolution on the Board’s regular meeting agenda would likely be incorporated into the plan’s land-use, policies, and goals sections.
The commission scheduled the next work session for Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. The work session was adjourned.
