Planning commission backs edits to comprehensive plan, removes renewable-energy reference from battery storage section

The Charlotte County Planning Commission reviewed updates to its draft comprehensive plan at a Sept. 21 work session and agreed by consensus to remove language linking battery storage explicitly to renewable energy.
Todd Fortune of the Commonwealth Regional Council presented updates made to the transportation portion of Draft Chapter 3 in response to comments from the Virginia Department of Transportation. Lauren Jones, also with the CRC, then reviewed minor edits to Chapters 6 and 7 that reflected feedback the Commission provided at its August work session.
Chairman Andrew Carwile raised concern about wording in the Battery Storage portion of Chapter 5, saying that “battery storage could be associated with other uses.” Commissioners agreed by consensus to remove the references to renewable energy from that section so the plan does not automatically tie storage facilities only to renewable projects.
The change will be incorporated into the draft comprehensive plan language the CRC presented. Staff and CRC representatives noted the edit is a policy drafting clarification rather than a formal change to county code; Commissioners did not adopt a formal motion or vote on the edit during the session.
The work session concluded with additional discussion on other topics on the agenda and was then adjourned.
