Murray County Board approves ARPA-backed Child Care Initiative to provide direct payments to family providers

The Murray County Board on Jan. 7 approved guidelines from the county Economic Development Authority to distribute federal ARPA funds to family childcare (FCC) providers across the county.
EDA staff described a survey of licensed FCC providers and recommended using about $21,000 of previously allocated ARPA funding to make direct payments rather than set up a reimbursement program that would require extensive criteria. The EDA recommended $500 per FCC site plus $50 per child; payments will be processed upon receipt of a short application and a W-9. The minutes note 21 FCC providers in Murray County.
Commissioner Mark Carlson moved to approve the EDA’s guidelines; Commissioner Loy Woelber seconded the motion, which passed. The board also preserved $15,000 in ARPA as potential match for an electric-vehicle charging station grant; those funds would move to childcare initiatives only if the county does not receive the EV grant.
