Murray County Board adopts sheriff salary settlement and clears routine permits, contracts and appointments

The Murray County Board of Commissioners met Jan. 21, 2025, in Slayton and adopted a settlement that sets the 2025 annual salary for the Murray County sheriff at $125,000.
Commissioner Mark Carlson presented Resolution No. 2025-01-21-01, which the board adopted unanimously after noting Sheriff Heath Landsman had filed a salary appeal in district court under Minnesota Statutes section 387.20. The board's action followed a closed-session settlement and a motion to approve a settlement and release of all claims between Murray County and Sheriff Heath Landsman (motion to approve the settlement was made by Commissioner Mark Carlson and seconded by Commissioner Loy Woelber). The resolution's effective salary figure is $125,000 for 2025.
Beyond the settlement, the board approved routine business and several staff requests. Commissioners approved the consent agenda, including Jan. 7 meeting minutes and commissioner warrants totaling $231,707.62. The board approved Local Unit of Government acknowledgments for LG220 exempt-permit raffle applications from the Shetek Area Sportsmen's Association (June 7, 2025 at Pelican Cove) and Pheasants Forever Murray County Chapter 991MN (March 8, 2025 at Key Largo), waiving the township-acknowledgment requirement in both cases.
The board scheduled a public abandonment hearing for County Ditch 28 on March 4, 2025, after staff reported landowners had petitioned to abandon CD 28 because they identified no ongoing benefits, no known connected tile and no outlet; part of the area over the former tile has been restored to wetland. The board approved a $49,069.75 allocation request for the Murray County Soil & Water Conservation District after an update from staff, who reported recent work on a waterway, a water-and-sediment control basin and several cover-crop contracts.
Commissioners authorized Jon Bloemendaal to sign the FY-25 Murray County Demolition Landfill Services agreement with SEH and approved soliciting quotes for a 12'x40' addition to the fairgrounds pork-producer building (the producers will fund construction). The board approved the purchase of a 2025 Polaris Ranger XP1000 for $19,935.00 to support parks maintenance and agreed not to trade in the 2016 Ranger but instead offer it for auction.
The board also approved renewing the Museum Management Agreement with the Murray County Historical Society and adopted the 2025 committee listing and appointments for commissioners and citizens covering a broad set of county and regional committees.
The meeting recessed midmorning for a planned site tour and reconvened at 2:00 p.m. for a visit to Little Explorers Daycare in Ghent. The board adjourned at 4:45 p.m.
