County flagged by DOC as affected by proposed rule to prohibit dispatcher as sole jail supervisor

The existing provision read that in facilities using a dispatcher or custody person as sole supervision, that person must be assisted when the inmate population exceeds five; DOC’s proposed revision would prohibit sole supervision entirely. The DOC stated the change is proposed because use of dispatcher/jailer as sole supervision has become an unreasonable safety and security risk, according to the letter presented to the board.
County officials noted the proposed revision could impose significant additional staffing costs on small local jails. The board reviewed the DOC letter and discussed potential local impacts but did not take formal action other than to note the update and record the county as affected.
