The Murray County Board approved a Foster Provider Assistance program on May 27 to help prospective foster parents pay for home improvements required during the licensure process.
Under the program, applicants may receive up to $5,000 based on estimates for materials and work needed to meet licensing requirements (for items such as windows, doors, fire extinguishers and minor structural work). The Economic Development Authority (EDA) recommended the program, which is designed to mirror the county’s existing Childcare Development Forgivable Loan approach. Applications will be submitted through Southwest Health and Human Services rather than through the general public.
Board materials state the county currently has 12 state-licensed foster homes, and that many foster arrangements in the county are relative-care or emergency care placements. The motion to approve the program passed at the May 27 meeting (moved by Mark Carlson; seconded by Roger Zins). The minutes do not detail whether awards are forgivable loans or grants, beyond the EDA’s reference to mirroring the Childcare Development Forgivable Loan structure; program administration details and award mechanism will be finalized by the implementing agency.
