Marquette County health department urges restoring health educator position before 2026 budget

During the June 3 Board of Health meeting, Health Officer Jayme Sopha told members the department continues to feel the effects of eliminating the Health Educator position roughly two years ago and wants the board to consider restoring the role for the 2026 budget.
Sopha outlined the responsibilities that position previously covered and said the department has absorbed what it could, cutting some programs that could not be maintained. She emphasized that, although the vacancy has been long-standing, restoring the role would help the department recover program capacity.
Sopha also presented a reception-hours graph showing the department has absorbed nearly 45 hours per month of reception duties for Human Services. The board reviewed a budget report from administration through March with no concerns, and members were provided a voucher of department expenses for May 2025.
Chair Judi Nigbor adjourned the meeting at 10:11 a.m. The next Board of Health meeting is scheduled for July 1, 2025 at 9:00 a.m.
