County expands Sports in Education program to 35 schools, funded from County budget

Hudson County will expand a county-funded Sports in Education program this school year, commissioners and program staff said at the Aug. 12 caucus. The program — which pairs athletics coaching with in-school instruction — will be delivered in 35 schools across seven municipalities and includes coaches and curriculum provided by Prime Athletic Development and the Rashawn Jackson Endowment Fund.
"This year is a full-fledged program with 35 schools in seven municipalities for public and charter schools," said Commissioner Kenneth Kopacz, discussing the county-funded effort. Director Gina Hulings confirmed the program is currently funded by the county and that administrators seek sponsorships and other support. "Correct, for now," Hulings said when asked whether the program is self-funded.
Commissioners asked about capacity and selection. Director Hulings said the program's maximum participation is 30 students per school and that last year the pilot served about 500 students; she described selection guidelines intended to reach underserved students who lack access to club sports. "Our goal is obviously to reach those underserved that are not capable to do club sports or anything like that," Hulings said. Commissioners asked for lists of schools that applied and guidelines for selection, which administration agreed to provide.
Next steps: administration said it will circulate the list of participating schools and provide the program's selection guidelines to commissioners.
