Cloud County awards three-year cash lease for Almon/East Pit to Brent Trost

The Cloud County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 23 unanimously approved a three-year cash lease for the Almon/East Pit to Brent Trost, setting the annual payment at $6,800.
Rod Michaud, Highway and Weed Administrator, presented four bids for the site: Richard Kindel ($5,200.00), Glenn Sulanka ($5,256.00), Bradyn Wachsnicht ($6,389.92) and Brent Trost ($6,800.00). On a motion by Commissioner Ron Copple and a second by Commissioner Dannie Kearn the board approved the lease for hay land from March 1, 2026 to March 1, 2029 and for pastureland from May 1, 2026 to May 1, 2029.
Michaud also reported operational items tied to the department that may affect pit use and maintenance: two employees will attend a grader operator class at no cost to the county, tire bids are due March 6 and will be opened March 9, and he raised the possibility of moving the department to four 10-hour workdays.
The lease award is recorded in the minutes as a unanimous vote by the three commissioners. The county will finalize lease paperwork and notify the successful bidder of start dates and any conditions in the lease.
