Tama County enacts temporary 10-ton weight embargo on stressed secondary roads

Tama County’s Board of Supervisors voted Feb. 23 to authorize temporary weight embargoes on sections of the county’s secondary road system after recent weather created soft subgrade and surface conditions.
The board adopted RESOLUTION 2-23-2026A, submitted by interim County Engineer Nick Amelon, which cites Sections 321.471, 321.472 and 321.473 of the Code of Iowa and authorizes the County Engineer’s Office to restrict gross loads on distressed road segments beginning Feb. 23, 2026. The resolution allows the engineer and district foreman to restrict traffic to a 10-ton gross load if necessary and to place temporary warning signs.
Why it matters: restricting heavy loads protects roads and reduces immediate repair needs and safety risks until surfaces can be stabilized. County officials said the action responds to current weather-related damage rather than a permanent policy change.
The motion was made by Supervisor Curt Kupka and seconded by Supervisor David Turner. The roll call vote was Turner, aye; Knebel, aye; Doland, aye; Kupka, aye; the resolution passed 4–0.
